Stuff The Turkey, Not the Sewer

November 23, 2010

Improperly disposing of the grease, oil, and fat left behind by your holiday feast can lead to sewer overflows and, in the worst cases, cause sewer backups for home owners.

Try these grease-handling tips from New Jersey American Water to keep your drains flowing freely:

Do not pour grease into sinks or toilets.

Allow grease to cool, use a rubber scraper to place it in a sealed container, and then dispose of it in the trash.

Install baskets or strainers in sink drains to catch food scraps.

Garbage disposals don’t break down grease; neither do dishwashing detergents.
